RICHMOND RAILWAY INQUIRY
ENGINE-DRIVER'S TESTIMONY. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Melbourne, August 11. At the Richmond disaster enquiry, Melville, driver of the Elsternwiek train, said that after leaving South Yarra he and the fireman watched for the advanced starter signal, and, when they reached it it was lowered. Aproaching Richmond he saw a fog signaller, who' appeared to be waving a green flag. He reduced speed to nine miles and then saw the end of the previous train very close. He could not ■see the home signal. He applied the brakes, but it was too late. Claims for injuries total 483. The railways receipts show a fallingoff, it is supposed due to nervousness and lack of confidence.
