SECOND PACIFIC CABLE.
MANAGER SURPRISED. By Cabie.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, August 10. The report that the Postmaster-Gen-eral has approved the BoaTd's scheme for a second' Pacific cable came as a surprise to Mr. Judd, manager of the Pacific Cable Board. He was unaware that the Board intended duplicating. He. had, however, cabled to Vancouver and received assurance that nothing had been done, even on the question of the direct Sydney and' New Zealand service. Altogether it was premature to state that the assent of New Zealand had been given to the New Zealand scheme, though such a service had been under consideration for some time. The direct service would compare very favorably with the present Vancouver service, and messages would be transmitted in less than twenty minutes.
