WAITARA NEWS.

(Fron Our Own Correspondent.) 'A meeting of those interested in the re-forming of the once existing Horticultural Society was held in the Foresters' Hall on Friday evening. Owing to the wretched weather the attendance was not so large as it otherwise would have been, but a num'ber of ladies as well as a fair sprinkling of men attended. Mr. G. V. Tate occupied the chair. The chairman said that it was now over six: years since the last show. The 1 old society had a balance of £l6, so that it whs not a matter of weak finance, but simply a then want of interest, which,' however, it was hoped would no longer remain. Mr. Newbery said that Mr. M. Jones, who ihad acted as the secretary of the old society, was unable to continue his duties. On the motion of Messrs Newbery and Grimstone,. Mr. T. Buchanan was appointed Ihon. secretary, and a vote of thanks to Mr. Jones was passed. The chairman said he thought tihere was every probability of the success of the institution, and as "gardening time" was now on it might mean that provision would be made for exhibit. The following officers were appointed:—Patron, Mr. W. T, Jennings, M.P.; president, his Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. P. Jenkins'); ivice-presidents, Messrs Newbery, Grimstone, Kerr, Tate, Nosworthy, Halcomibe, Birdling, Rattenbury, J. W; Foreman, and Captain Armstrong; committee, Mesdames Bleakley, Vickers, senr., 33. Cole, S. Andrews, M. Jones, Bieheno, Grimstone, T. Elliot and Birdling, Misses Pearce, Bieheno and Tate, Messrs Newbery, Kerr, Crimstone, E. Jones, W. Nosworthy, CHubb, Sandford, Gilbert and Dn Ramage. Tie membership fee was fixed at ss. It was resolved to hold a spring show, at a date j to be decided on later. Al meeting of members of the North Taranaki Ploughing Association was held on Saturday afternoon at Mr. Jenkins' mart, the chair 'being occupied by Mr. Jaff. Rat.tenbury. The subcommittee appointed for canvassing reported that with donations and membership fees £27 was promised and some £8 wortlh of special prizes. The following officers were appointed:-—Patron, iMr. W. T. Jennings, MJP.j president, Mr. W. Birdling; vice-presidents, Messrs W. F. Jenkins, J. Eattenbury and A, Kerr; committee, Messrs W. Rook, J. George, G. V. Tate, E. Cole, P. J«nnins, G, N. Skelton, G. -Foreman, and officers ex officio. It was resolved to hold the opening competition on September 8 at Mr. Birdling*s property, kindly placed at the Bervices of the Association. Messrs Eattenbury, Tate andßook were appointed a sub-committee to draw up a prize list and rules, the same to be submitted to a further meeting to be held on Saturday next. The valuation Toll for. the borough came to hand on Saturday and shows the capital value to have increased by £54.626. The 1909 figures stood at £138,853, and the 1910 at £193,4791 Unimproved values have risen from £55,151 to £88,879, an increase of £33,728, i whilst improvements rose from £83,707 I to £104,60©, an increase of £20,898.
