FIRE AT MOSGIEL

DAMAGE CONSIDERABLE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin; Last Night. A fire the origin of which is so far unexplained, broke out in an old wooden building containing 34 rooms and belonging to the estate of Elizabeth. O'Kane, at Mosgiel to-night. The fire was discovered about 6.50 p.m. and appeared to originate in the premises of George Patterson, cabinetmaker, who occupied two rooms upstair; and two on the ground floor. Mr. Patterson had been ill and had not been in the building since Friday. Mrs. Patterson, who was looking after the business in his absence, left the place at 5:50 p.m., She states there had been no fire or light in the place during the day. The fire brigade got the flames under after an hour's fight, but the building was badly damaged, and the portion destroyed included the rooms occupied by Mr. Patterson, two rooms occupied by Mr. Newman, painter, and paperlianger, three rooms occupied by Mrs. Kidd, fruiterer and confectioner, the premises of Mr. Mitchell, pastrycook and the proprietor of the tearooms and the office' and storeroom of the local branch of the Otago Farmers' Co-operative Association. The volunteer hall was slightly] damaged. The building was insured for £6OO in the Atlas Office, but the loss is estimated at £2OO above that amount. Mr. Patterson's stock was insured for £l5O with the Alliance Co., but as his stock was heavy he estimates his loss at £2OO over the insurance.

Mr. Mitchell had a policy for £l5O with the Northern Co. Mr. Newman valued his stock at £SOO, but it was insured for only £IOO in the Atlas Office. About £IOO worth was saved. Mrs. Kidd, who had no insurance, estimates her loss at about £IOO.

The Otago Farmers Co-operative Association had a fairly heavy stock and its loss is estimated at about £4OO. Its insurances, which are not yet available, are held by the Farmers' Union Mutual Insurance Company.
