The death is announced of Mrs. Hea- < phy, widow of the late Major Heaphy, \ one of the few remaining links with the earliest days of New Zealand. Catherine Letitia Heaphy was the eldest daughter of the late Rev. J. F. Churton, i M.A., LL.D., chaplain to the forces, and afterwards first vicar of St. Paul's Church. The appointment of Captainand-Adju-tnnt F. T. Bellringer to the rank of Major is gazetted. Major Bellringer passed his examination some eighteen months ago, and his rapid promotion from the rank of lieutenant in the Taranaki Rifles to that of major is a tribute to the earnestness with which he took up the study and practice of mattersmilitary. n i—-egg
