AMUSEMENTS.
MIZPAH. One of our, northern exchanges, in noticing the production of this play, which is to be presented at New Plymouth on Tuesday next, says:—Melodrama as presented by most of the theatrical managements nowadays means a*plot which is one long tissue of improbabilities, situations that are absurd instead of being effective, sentiment that more often causes laughter instead of tears, and comedy that is either stupidly vulgar or unpleasantly suggestive. The'melodrama of the Taylor-Oarrington Company is a very different type of play, and reminds old playgoers of the sterling, healthy class of drama written by Diou Boucicault, Palgrave, Simpson, and Watts Phillips. "Mizpah,"' the*-latest production of the Taylor-Carrin@ton management, is a remarkably pretty play. The plot is simple, but romantic and interesting, the situations sensational but convincing, # the comedy screamingly funny without in the slightest degree outraging propriety or good taste. The stage setting of the drama is hoth characteristic and pretty; some of the scenes being really beautiful, and the scenic artist, Mr. Matthews, deserves the highest praise for his very artistic and effective work . While Mr. Taylor and Miss Carrington continue to present such attractive plays as "Moondyne" and "Mizpah" they are certain to command the most liberal patronage of New Plymouth playgoers.
