BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Winfteld), Councillors Gibbs, Fawcett, Bennett, Tarplee, Surrey and Young. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — iFrom Mr. Segedin re rates and electric light bill due to Borough Council. —Decided letter lie on the table till the next meeting. From the Department of Lands re ownership of bed of Waiongona-iti river. —Matter to be referred to borough solicitor. From J. Hawkins authorising asphalting of footpath in front of Inglewood Hotel, his share of cost not to exceed £2O. From the North Island Railway League asking the Inglewood Chamber of Commerce to join the ferred to Tradesmen's Association. From Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., enclosing report of the Municipal Conference, which he attended as the borough's representative.—Decided that the thanks of the Council be conveyed to Mr. Hine for representing the Council. - -From Pike and Waters asking for reduction in water charges, and also for permission to erect a sign board.—Left to the Works Committee with power to act. From R. C. Hughes asking the Council to forego rates on certain sections.—Left in bauds of Finance Committee' to consider and report on. From Treasury advising payment of New Zealand Railways water rates. From B. E. Sutherland asking for a crossing from street to his residence in Crescent Terrace—The Works Committee reported that the matter had been attended to. (From the Onaero Brick and Tile Co., regretting their inability to supply 6 inch pipes. From the Captain, Salvation Army, asking that pipes be laid from boundary section to water tables.—The Works Committee reported that the matter had been attended to. 'From Building Inspector, advising that the proposed addition at back of main building occupied by Mr. Leslie would not, if in iron, increase the fire risk.— The application for additions (in, iron) was granted. From Inglewood butchers, petitioning for exemption from closing.—Granted. From Fawcett and Henderson, asking that" pipes be fitted for crossing from their paddock.—Lefi in the hands of the Works Committee with power to act. From I. 0. Clark, re supplying drain pipes. A deputation from the Moa Dairy co., consisting of Messrs Herlihy and McMahon, waited on the Council with reference to the amount charged for water power.—Mr. Herlihy explained that the company considered the amount charged (£2O) viz., excessive, and wished the Council to consider the question of a reduction. He pointed out that unlike other ratepayers they brought no expense on the Council for footpaths, etc., and also the company paid heavy rates at present. Mr.Mahon considered the former rate ample, and said that the recent increase was the last straw which broke the camel's back. He thought that the company's rates were previously heavy enough, and hoped that the Council would see their way to reducing the extraordinary water rate. On the -withdrawal of the deputation the Council went into committee. On resuming, Councillor Gibbs proposed that the company be allowed a rebate of 10 per cent.—The motion was lost. Councillor Young, on behalf of the Works committee, reported that the I question of Matai sstreet had been considered, and it had been decided to remetal the street as soon as possible. The committee recommended that tenders be called for good metal, delivery at Councils yards, and that the footpath metal from the pit be sold to private persons for 3s per yard.-The report was aaoptCouncillor Gibbs, on behalf of the Baths Committee, renorted that Mr. Spencer had inspected the baths, and reported a serious leakage. Mr. Spencer recommended means, at a cost of about £ls, of rectifying and stopping leakage. The Baths committee proposed commencing the work immediately.— AdoptAccounts amounting to £124 7s 8d were passed for payment. It was reported some time ago that Mr. C. A. Cramer had disposed of his bakery business and intended leaving the district. Mr. Cramer, however, informs me that he has no intention of removing, but intends to carry on his business as at present.
