Mr. Cecil Wright and Mr. Keg. George were amongst the passengers per s.s. Rarawa for Aiu-kijind last night. The tjeath toox p.acc at Oneliunga on Monday, in her eightieth year, of Mrs. Heapy, widow of the late Major Heapy, V.C., and daughter of the late Rev. J. F. Churton.
Word has been received that Mr. C. T. Parkinson, son of Mr. W. A. Parkinson, of Hawera, has been granted the M.A. degree at Oxford, with second class honours in history. It is semi-officially announced that the Czar and Czarina will visit Germany in the autumn. The Czarina undergoes a '"heart cure" at Nauheim. The Czai will probably meet the Kajser. —Cable. The many friends of Mr. A. H. Glasgow, manager of the Union Bpk of Australia, New Plymouth, who is laid up with fever, will ibe pleased to learn that he is making good progress towards rel covery.
A Westport wire states that Mr. Hanan, barrister, who defended the citizens against charges of breach of the licensing laws at the recent Massey entertainment, was presented with an Mluminated address, also a Chesterfield couch. It is now understood that Mr. H. Stocker will not contest the election,of a west ward councillor. .Mr. J. T. Mannix's name is freely mentioned, and it is understood that a strong committee is being formed to "run" him for the seat.
Mr. T. Clarkson, who is retiring from the editorship of the Gisborne Times, was last night entertained at a garnering of citizens, presided over by the acting-mayor (Mr. W. Pettie) and presented with a purse of sovereigns, and an address on behalf of 130 contributors.—Press telegram.
