Mr. C. R. Smith, formerly the manager of the Alliance Assurance Company in Dunedin, has been appointed Wellington manager of the company. Two Wellington residents died on Wednesday—Mr. Alexander C. I'aterson, aged 75, late of Oamaru, and Mr. W. H. Beagleho'le. aged 7G years. Miss May Aris, of the teaching staff of tlhe lluwera District High School, has received notice of her transfer to Taihape. Miss Nora Roach, of Normanby, is to succeed Miss Aria.—Star. A Press Association cable message from Londo-.i announces that Sir George Sydenham Clarke, Governor of Bombay, is engaged to be mairried to the widow of Captain Reynolds, Codnam Grange, Hampshire. News was received in Wellington on Thursday of the death o£ Mr. W. H. Eve, who for seventeen years has been London agent for the New Zealand University. The deceased was of high scholarly attainments, and had edited numerous French and German classics Cable advice had been received thai Mr. Edward Richard Hughes, eldest son of Mr. Robert Hughes, of Otaki, who took up land in Canada about five years ago, was killed in a storm at Saskatchewan, North-West Canada, on July 22. Deceased was thirty-years years of age.
.Sir Joseph Ward leaves Wellington for Auckland to-day, and attends the late Mr. Baume's funeral on Sunday. He Jlays the foundation stone of the new post office on Monday, and reaches Wellington again on Tuesday afternoon. Several Auckland members accompany the Premier north.
i.Mr. A. J. Roberts, the 'young inventor whose remarkable inventions in the control of .torpedoes and aeroplanes by means of Hertzian waves have attracted so much attention of late, was lor several years a resident of New Zealand. For some time he lived at Patea, where he installed and personally supervised the electric lighting,plant. Here he aflso married Miss W. Howitt, daughter of an old resident of Patea. Mr. Roberts waß also a resident of Christchurah, *nd gave instruction in applied electricity to technical schools and classes throughout Canterbury. Subsequently he went to Australia, and then to London. Mr. A. Howitt, of the Head Offive staff of the Railway Department, has received a letter from Mr. Roberts, advising that his brother-in-law recently devised a moddl balloon, and by means of a keyboard was able to control the balloon bv sending it up and down in a large hall. Themanager of the Hippodrome made a lucrative offer tothe inventor in connection with the balloon for entertainment purposes.
