STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Stratford Scuool Committee was held last.nighi. j>usinesß oi a routine nature was transacted. In reply to a circular from the Wellington Householders' League, the committee decided dt was dn favor of a referendum being taken on Bible-reading in schools. Mr. W. J. Otway, Inspector oi Stock for this district, has been transferred to Ohaeawai, north of Auckland. Mr. J. Halligan will probably succeed Mr. Otway. A horse belonging to Mr. C. J. Wiley strayed on to the railway line, and sustained such injuries as to necessitate its ' being shot. Twenty-one applications have been received for the position of custodian of bhe 'Hall, ranger, inspector, etc. It is evident that the multifarious duties attached to the office has not frightened candidates. Instructions have been received by the local Post Office to render detailed accounts weekly for telephone calls over 3d. This will be regarded as a marked improvement by business firms who have occasion to use the telephone to any extent. A fire occurred at Toko to-day, when a building owned by Mr. W. L. Kennedy was burnt to the ground. The front portion of the building was used as a store' by Mr. Cluet, and at the back was a residence occupied by Mr. and Mrs. W. Pratt The fire spread very rapidly, and very little was saved. So far the insurances are not available, buE tt is understood that both Mr. Olueft and Mr. and Mrs. Pratt will be heavy losers.
