THE INDIAN BUDGET.

Montagu made an Indian Budget statement, declaring that -new taxation was necessary for the first time since 1895, owing to a deficit of £750,000, due to the non-expansion of several services and increased expenditure on education. The Uovernment roposed to augment the Customs duties on liquors and to increase duties on silver, petroleum, tobacco and stamps. Referring to the unrest of a small minority in India, Mr. Montagu claimed there had been considerable Tevulsion of feeling in our favor, due largely to the horror as assassinations. The Indian Government was determined to arm and assist the Viceroy in an unflinching war, against sedition and calumny. I Mr. Redgwood's amendment disavowing sympathy with crime and deploring the recent restrictive legislation in India was negatived by 229 to 48.
