Browsing near, in fact much too near, a well, lie suddenly found himself precipitated to the bottom, fortunately making the descent backwards. A daughter of .Mr. l'abisli who heard the "Hop," at once gave the alarm and willing h:inds were soon at work to rescue the unfortunate bather, who was submerged to the chin. After an hour or two of strenuous work and by means of a little bush engineering, the Sunday afternoon diver wns restored to terra fir ma, the owner arriving - home just in time to thank the rescue party for their noble and successful efforts. Amongst those who deserve medals for this fine piece of work were Messrs A. L. Lawrence, Hfldreil, Chapman, W. Judd, James and Chapman.
A farewell social to Mr. «T. Bissett, who is shortly leaving to take up a position as manager of a cheese factory at Waverlev. was held on the 22nd iinst., "and though dame weather was in one of her most boisterous moods, the hall was filled, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. .Mr. J. Knowles, chairman oi the directors of the cheese factory, during an interval addressed the company. He remarked that though of course they were all sorry Mr. Bissett was leaving Tariki, it was only what was to be. expected, merit and ability being bound to assert themselves. Mr. Bissett had hoth, and he was leaving them to fake a more lucrative and responsible position, which he felt sure he would fill with credit. (Applause). Mr. Bissett had filled the position of first assistant at the factory from the start, three rears ago. During that period all the cheese turned out had been first grade, and taking into' consideration the adverse climatic conditions that had prevailed during a. great part of last season, which meant that a lot of milk which could not really be called the best quality, though above the average as regards test, had to be handled, and he thought it reflected great credit on the manager mid the first assistant that they had turned out good cheese and coukT also show mat the quantity made tallied with the milk received and butter-fat paid for. (Applause). Mr. Bissett had not only established a reputation for being a hard and conscientious worker, but had also been a prominent figure in all social matters connected with the place, and when lie asserted that "Jim" was a jolly good fellow all round, he felt that he was merely voicing the opinions oi all present (enthusiastic applause). Mr. Knowles, on'behalf of the Tariki residents, then presented Mr. Bissett with a silver mounted travelling bag: and rug, and in wishing him "God's speed" hoped he would keep a warm spot in his heart for Tariki. M.r. Bissett, who was_ visibly affected, thanked Mr. Knowles for the kind things he had said of him, ana he also thanked, them all most heartily for the handsome present they had made him, find which lie would always value most highly; he wished he could express how much he appreciated their kindness, but as he could not do that, would have to content himself with saying that he was very sorry to part with his Tariki friends, and in assuring them that, he should always look back with pleasure to his sojourn in Tariki (applause). The committee and secretarv, Mr. McDonald, are to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements. Mr. P. R_ Horn acted as M.C, and everyone seemed to have a, really good time.
