THE TOWNS OF NEW ZEALAND. Invercargill's claim to be the fifth town in New Zealand would appear to be strongly supported, not only by its population statistics but by the total of its factories and shops. It has 352 factories and 305 shops, and its nearest competitors are 'Napier, 296 and 315; Palmerston North, 254 and 293; Wanganui, 247 and 234; Nelson, 271 and 248; Tim&ru, 235 and 222; New Plymouth, 194 and 233; Gisborne, 188 and 283: Masterton, 148 and 160; Greymouth, 143 and 170; Oamarit, 132 and 152; Ashburton, 128 and 133; Hastings, 106 and 128; Blenheim, 102 and 84. The four centres are as follow*: Auckland, 1539 and 1222; Wellington, 1047 and 1538; Christchurch, 1310 and 1213; Dunedin, 1174 and 1244. THE MUSICIANS BILL. It has been definitely decided not to proceed with the New Zealand Society of Musicians Bill this session. Under the Bill introduced by Mr. Sidey it was originally proposed that a Council should enquire into the qualifications of persons who desired to be registered. The Education Committee, to whom the measure was referred, amended the proposal in the direction of taking away this power from the Council and vesting it in the University Senate. To this alteration the various societies in conference agreed onlv a few weeks a»o, but as one of the* societies subsequently withdrew its support to the suggestion, there was no option but to drop the Bill in the meantime.
