He shot the arresting constable dead. A mob burned the negro at the stake. SHERIFF ATTACKED WITH PITCHFORKS. York, July 22. Seven negroes with pitchforks attacked Deputy-Sheriff Cauley when he was arresting a negro at a farm at Elliott, Mississippi. Cauley retaliated with a revolver, killing five and wounding two others seriously.
