The French police do not believe it possible for Crippen to pose as a Frenchman. The man at Vernet-les-Bains, who in every way resembled Crippen, described himself as Henri Talbot, «itio> owner of Narbonne, but enquiry at Narbonne showed he was unknown there. He drove twelve miles in a carriage from Mont Louis to Puy Cerda on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees.

Crippen's and Miss Neve's photographs and handwriting are being circulated throughout France. There are numerous English detectives in the south-west districts of France.

Several persons in England, including a well-known athlete, have been mistaken for Crippen and 1 momentarily detained.
