A SHOCKING CASE.

CRUELTY TO A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 20. At the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., a woman named Valentine Moiser was charged with illtreating Dominica Moiser, aged four years and ten months, in a manner likely to cause injury to its health. On behalf of the police a remand was asked for till July 20, and was granted, bail being fixed at £SO and one surety at £SO. The case arose out of a lire in Moiser's house yesterday. At the time of the outbreak a laborer named Oarroll was passing the house, and hearing the child crying, broke in the window and felt about till he found the child, and lifted it through the window. The child had almost collapsed from the effects of the smoke, and the bedding on which it was lying was ablaze. According to the sub-inspector's statement, the mother went out and left it tied up to the bed with a piece of string round its neck. Constable Doyle arrived on the scene and took charge of the child, which was found, it was asserted, to be in a shocking condition. Subsequently a doctor arrived and ordered the removal of the child to the hospital. The magistrate committed another child of six to St. Mary's Industrial School. Sub-inspector Norwood stated that in view of the probable necessity for the child's remaining in the hospital he might have to ask for a further remand.
