COAL MINE ACCIDENT.
CAGE FALLS THIRTY FEET. THIRTEEN INJURED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received July 20, 5.35 p-m. Sydney, July f!0. A cage fell in the Metropolitan colliery at Helensburg. It is rumored that several were lolled. The wires are down, and it is impossible to confirm the news. Later. There were sixteen in the case, which fell thirty feet. None were killed, but thirteen were injured, thre snously. EFFECTIVE SAFETY CSATOH. f PREVENTS LOSS OF LIFE. Rceived July 20, 9.15 p.m. Sydney, July 20. ■The Metropolitan shaft is 1300 feet deep, and when the cage was within twenty feet of the bottom a hitch occurred in the winding gear. The cage, weighing over two tons, shot down with great rapidity, but the safety catch prevented it striking the floor of the shaft with force; otherwise the sixteen occupants would probably have been killed. All were thrown out with much force. Two men each had a leg broken, and a third a knee fractured, all being sent to the hospital. Ten others suffered slight injuries to limbs and from shock.
