The six men Siddeley, tfredin, ±fatchelor, James and Charles Paton —who pleaded guilty to perjury in the Doaald Harper case, were each sentenced to two years' imprisonment A WORD IN SEASON. At the Farmers' Conference, Mr. Harper, Railway Commissioner, complained that farmers showed no disposition to move the million and a half bags of wheat now stacked at country stations. Unless it was soon moved he was sure there would be a heavy loss, as the approaching wool season would absorb all available trucks. A ROWING PROPOSAL.
Received July 14, 11.10 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The Rowing Association is considering the proposal of Mr. Cunningham, of Melbourne, to send an Australian eight-oar crew to compete against an -English eight on the Zambesi next spring. A prominent amateur, who is negotiating the scheme in England, states, he can raise £IOOO to defray the expenses of the Australians.
BANK-NOTE FORGERIES. ■ Sydney, July 14. Many forged five-pound notes on the Bank of Australasia have been circulated. The forgeries have been executed by means of photography. In the Legislative Council the vicepresident of the executive stated that if banks cease to issue notes when the Federal Government issues State notes they will lose £34,000 annually irom composition on notes. CONFESSED PERJURER RELEASED. Melbourne, July 14. William Harrison, one of th-i accused who pleaded guilty teethe charge of perjury, having already served three months for the offence, the Judge allowed him to withdraw the plea and to substitute not guilty. He was rtischarged.
AN UNPOPULAR GOVERNOR. Sydney, July 14. M. Ricard, Governor of Noumea, has arrived, en route from France to Noumea. He was visibly amused when he road accounts of the recent ferment due to his policy and administration. ITe stated that he had mapped out a plan of action, and returned to give effect to it, with the French Government's approval, and was optimistic regarding the future.
