CLASS LEGISLATION?
SUGGESTION OF LABOR COUNCIL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. A deputation representing the Labor Council waited on the Premier to-day to oppose a suggestion put forward by a deputation yesterday that Government assistance should he given in the direction of importing domestic servants. It was stated that the Council did not want to see a wall built round this country, nor did it advocate an insular unpopulated New Zealand, but on behalf of the workers it protested against public monev being spent to provide cheap and convenient labor for a rich and select class, already well able to pay for its own requirements. The de-i putation also opposed the suggested introduction of boy labor for the agricultural industry.
The Premier, in replv, said that, with all" due deference to the <1 "nutation, he thought something would have to be done, regarding domestic servants. There was a vph- large section of the con'n'iuiitv afl'eeted. ouite outside what had been called a select class. It was of the first con sentience that the Government should do everything to help the natural increase of population in the interests of the wo v, '<" - s pa well as o* any other class. "My belief." lip added, "is tlin+. the legislation which I propose to s"bmit to Parliament this sppsion will be ef material assistance to workers receiving under £2OO per T~p*r." Tf t)i« workers eould not affnrrl general beln. assistance could be given in i nnother wn.v during times of v"it"rniti\ Tf would cost a good deal, but he thought we could afford it.
