COURSING.
(By "Motirroa.") As advertised in another column, the Taranaki Plumpton Coursing Club meeting opens at Ha wera to-day, and will be ooncluded on Friday. The club's enclosure at Whareroa, Ha wera, is in perfect order, and the lion, secretary, Mr. T. Trask, and a busy committee have left no stone unturned to make the meeting; a success. We have a fair number of welt-bred,dogs in Taranaki, and there is no reason why coursing should not take on here, as it has in Wangamii and Palmerston North. The larger centres, of course, go in for coursing on a big scale, and good sport is always provided. We all love really good clean sport, but not many of us*can afford the luxury of running a racehorse. This is just where coursing scores. Anyone can keep a dog—in fact, most of us do keep dogs—and there is no reason why sport-lovers should not keep useful (and payable) animals instead of the nondescript bonechewers which at present are a nuisance to us and to everybody else. Satisfactory entries were received for the Hawcra meeting, a good number of outside coursers being engaged, and patrons may rely upon witnessing good days' sport. The Palmerston Coursing Club held a meeting tost week, when ex-champion sculler William Webb acted as slipper. The Puppy Stakes were won by Mr. J. Hayman'* Lamplight, with Mr. S. Woodall's Brass Plate second. The chief event fell to Mr. A. H. Roger's The Dart, Mr. J. Hayman's Watchman being placed second. Wangamii sportsmen were very successful at the meeting, and they have a sinking lot of dogs in Webbtown.
