PROTECTION OF HARES.
PROSECUTION IN WELLINOTON. | By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. A case under the Animals' Protection Act was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Robert Yarrow, restaurant keeper, was charged with having in his possession hares for a greater period than seven days after the cose of the shooting season. Sub-Inspector Norwood pointed out that 1910 was a close season for imported game, but by an Order-in-Council imported game could be killed in Wellington district from May 14, 1910, to June 14, 1910. It was an offence for a person to hold in nis possession hares for a greater period than seven days after the season closed. Defendant had been found with hares in his possession on July 1. Yarrow said he got the hares from Timaru. He had no idea they were protected, and was under the impression that they could he used in his dining-room. They were not intended for sale. Defendant was fined 10s and 7s costs, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.
