GENERAL TELEGRAMS.
A CONVENT BURGLED. By Telegraph. —Press Association, Wellington, Yesterday. A burglary took place at Otaki Convent on Sunday, when some £fiO in a cashbox was removed in the daylight to a secluded spot, where the box was burst open with an axe. All the money, except £l7 in cheques, was taken. The money belonged to Sister Paul, and was left in her private room. It is evident that the thief knew his way about the premises. STEALING OPIUM. . Wellington, Yesterday. William Walter Burgess, a young man, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment at the Magistrates Court for the theft of 08 ounces of opium, valued at £lO, the property of a local chemist.
RAIN IN CANTERBURY. Christchurch. Yesterday. Heavy rain from the south-east and south-west has fallen generally. The fall in the city last night was an inch and a quarter. There has heen much snow in the back country, and it is anticipated that all the Canterbury rivers will lie heavily flooded. MINISTERS' MATERIAL CARES. Christchurch, Yesterday. The Presbytery this morning adopted an overture to the General Assembly urging the increase of the minimum stipends paid to ministers. Tt was stated that the minimum north of the Waitaki river was £l"j) per annum, but the minister had to find his own horse and trap, and with the increased cost of living many ministers were snrclv troubled over material affairs. It was suggested that the minimum salary be ■£2 flo with a manse.
