STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford,. Last Night. » An old settler of this district, ia the: person of Mr. John Keightley, passed away yesterday. • Mr. Keightley, ,who was bora in 1885, came to this country in 1875, taking up his residence at Inglewood. Three years later he settled on the Radnor road, and was the first settler to bring his family into that district. He leaves four daughters and five sons to mourn their loss*. Constable Beasley, who has been on holiday leaye, has resumed duty. In l connection with the policing of this town I it is about time steps were taken to secure another constable. The town is growing, and its extended area makes! it. all the more difficult to properly supervise. A policeman is 'human after' all —not an automatic machine—and to expect the two constables to be all over fihe town day and night, is asking, rather too much. The time has conie' when there should be a night patrol,! and the large amount of piljering that' is going on is a very strong reason for' tlie step to' be taken. I Properties continue to ehange hands. | ; Messrs. Meinby Bros, have disposed of 'their property at Huiroa to Mr. W-' Huzziff, Mr. W. Colson has sold his farm on the Beaconsfield road to Mr. |F. Allan, and Mr. F. W. Wake has sold 100 acres of his Stanley Road property ,to "Mr. W. Colson.

Mr. J. W. Read, the champion billiard player, is playing an exhibition game at the Stratford Club to-night To-morrow night he will be similarly engaged at the Egmont Club. I hear that a couple of residents are down with typhoid fever. Fortunately, the attacks are very mild' ones. The following are the results of the Medal competitions played on the local links last week:— —Men.—
