WANGANUI NOTES. Fine weather drew a. record atendance on Saturday to witness the playofi for the senior cup tie at Wanganui. The teams engaged —Wanganui and Pirates—had met twice previously inig season, the first match seeing the Wanganuis on top by 10 to C, and the second match falling to Pirates ,by 8 to 3. Pirates were favorites for Saturday's match, and the affair assumed quite a Sbar-Tukapa aspect as far as strenuous play and leather-lunged barracking was ■ concerned. It was a queer game. Pirates hopped^off smartly, and scored a ' try inside five minutes. The balj was, DO sooner moving again than" the Black I again ran over, aud this try was converted. Eight to nil, and only eight minutes playing. Wanganui then woke up arid heaved into it with great vigour. The Red forwards charged to the Black's twenty-five. A. Black back kicked feebly and Jago, securing iu a handy position, potted a neat goal for Wanganui. B—4. Encouraged by their success, the Eeds again return "to the attack, and hot work followed on the Pirates' line. Southconibe (Wanganui) had several shots at goal, the ball just .missing the uprights. Good kicking by the Pirates, removed play to neutral ground, '.then 1 the Black forwards broke away from a line-out, and invaded the Red's twenty'five. Pirates made great efforts to : score, but the defence was too solid. The Blacks had all the better of the first spell. The second spell saw Wangantii' quickly attacking, and the Blacks found relief in frequent forcing. Wanganui backs were handling the ball smartly, and only the solid tackling of tki'r opponents saved the situation. Excitement ran high, and barraokers encouraged* both sides to "bog into it." Play became fast and strenuous. Pirates broke; through, and were just stopped' Off the Wanganui line. Wanganui' rushed 1 play back again. Up and dmvtf the field they went, first the Reds and' then the 1 Blacks getting the upper j hand". Both sides saved by occasional j forcing. Wanganui had rather the bet-' ter of this spell, but failed to score, andi the game ended': Pirates 8, Wanganui i 4. Pirates are champions for the season 1909.—0wn Correspondent. / 1 THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
