BOOKMAKER AND TOTALISATOR

CHURCHES PROTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Monday. In the Methodist and Baptist Churches yesterday resolutions were carried urging the Premier to make the bookmaker's calling illegal, and requesting that the people be given an early opportunity of expressing their opinions on the totalisator. It is stated that the Chamber of Commerce will be invited this afternoon to discuss the gambling question with special reference to the bookmaker and totalisator. THE CHURCH OF CHRIST. Dunedin, Monday. The Church of Christ carried resold tions supporting the suppression of bookmakers and in favor of the abolition of the totalisator.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VIEWS. Christchurch, Last Night. A deputation representing the- Ministers' Association and local business men waited on the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce this afternoon to ask the Council to urge the Government to abolish the legalised bookmaker. The Council of the Chamber, after discussion, arrived at the following resolution:— "That in the opinipn of this Council the legalising of bookmakers should be abolished, and that all betting on racecourses and public streets be made a misdemeanour .without the option of a fine." It was further decided to forward a copy of the resolution to, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, with a request to bring it under -the notice of the Prime Minister next Monday, when the Anti- , Gambling 'League's deputation waits on him.

Dunedin, Last Night. At a' meeting of the Committee ol Che Chamber of Commerce to-day a motion was adopted opposing the licensing of bookmakers and urging the Government to repeal the legislation making provision for affording them legal recogni : tion. *,

WANGANUI SUPPORT. • Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui Council of Churches tonight passed a resolution sympathising with the anti-gambling movement, and the effort which is being made to bring about the repeal of the Gaming Act in so far as the licensing of bookmakers is concerned.
