MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
QUARTERLY RETURNS. Returns of the business done in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court during the quarter ended June 30 show that, in the civil jurisdiction of the Court, 223 plaints were issued, monies amounting to £3630 15s 4d were sued for, £834 6s 4d recovered, and 17 judgment summonses and 36 distress warrants were issued.
In the criminal jurisdiction of the Court 73 males and 8 females were apprehended. Of these, 7 males were discharged for want of prosecution, 1 male was dismissed, 7 males were committed for trial or sentence, 40 males and 6 females were summarily convicted, 30, males and 0 females were fined, 5 males wore imprisoned in lieu of fine, 4 males were peremptorily imprisoned, 3 males were bound over, 3 males and 1 female were convicted and discharged with cautions, and orders were made in respect to 9 males and 1 female. Xhe principal offenders were: Assault, 1 male; burglary, 3 males;, forgery and uttering. 1 male; theft from dwelling, 3 males; obtaining money by false pretences, 3 males; sending false telegram, 1 male; ordinary theft, 1 male; lunacy, 2 males, 1 female; prohibition orders, (i males; application for summary separation order, 1 male; drunkenness, 21 males, 2 females; using indecent language, 4 males; drunk in charge of horse and trap. 1 female; affiliation, 2 males; disobedience of maintenance orders, 2 males; indecency. 3 males; breach of prohibition order, 1 male; breaches of borough bv-la\ys, 6 males and 2 females; failing to clear noxious wp»ds. 3 males; breaches of railway bv-laws, 2 females; disobeying commands on the high seas. 1 mule: breaches of Factories Act. 3 males; breaches of Education Act. 4 males.
