THE INDRADEVI INQUIRY.
AN INCONCLUSIVE VERDICT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. The Nautical Court of Enquiry into the cause of the fire on the steamer Indradevi gave no evidence of neglect or wrongful act by the master, officer;, crew, or men employed in (lischarpjiiiEr her, and found no conclusive evidence of the cause of the fire. The cargo destroyed or damaged was not of a nature suggesting spontaneous ignition, and its inaccessibility rendered improbable its ignition by sparks or bv anyone cainina access to that part of the hold. The position of the oil and paint looker with tanks containing various oils, including raw linseed oil. inuneliatrly above the seat of the fire, pointed to the possibility that oil leaked throusrh tile deck into the charcoal insulation and there generated by oxidation «uflieient heat to eause ignition. Whether or not. this was the cause of the fire, the Court was of opinion that so combustible a substance as charcoal should not be usned for insulating the holds of ship-;.
