POLITICAL NOTES.
■Some days ago Mr. Wright asked the Minister for Justice whether he would give the country the reason why the prisoner Powelka received such an apparently severe sentence. The Prime Minister now states that it is understood that a deputation intends to wait upon the Minister for Justice, and to present a petition in favor of the prisoner, audi the views of the Government will be stated on that occasion. "The country is not so much in need of legislation as of good administration. But I do not say that it is not getting good administration, for the Government has been showing a keen desire to advance the well-being of the departments under its control. It is doing really good work and can be helped very much by constructive, though not by destructive, criticism." Mr. J. C. Thomson, In reply to Mr. Buiek, the Hon. T. Mackenzie stated that any promise made by the Prime Minister with reference to the establishment of a national dairy school at Palmerston North would be carried out unless the necessity for such a promise being given effect to ceases to exist.
