The death is reported of Taare Waitara, one of the best-known natives on the coast, at the. Mangaone pah, near New Plymouth. Taare Waitara was the son-in-law of the late chieftain-prophet Te Whiti, and the mantle of the great prophets fell on him. He refused, however, to keep up the anti-pakeha feeling engendered by these tohungas, and whilst he has been in authority he has favored industry on the part of the Maoris. The body will be taken to Parihaka for interment.
