INGLEWOOD NEWS

BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Fitom Our Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held on Wednesday evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Winfield), Crs. Bennett, Fjjwcett, Gibbs, Young, Surrey and Tarplee. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows:

From Mr. L. G. P. Spencer, thanking Council for report of work done in connection with water supply and sewerage; from same, quoting estimate for inspecting and supply opinion on state of baths. From Bruce County Council, enclosin copy of a resolution with recommendation to the Government re notification of change of ownership.—The Council deckled to support the Bruce County Council in the matter.

Cr. Gibbs, an behalf of the Baths Committee reported that for some time past a leak of considerable size ihad been noticed in the baths. This leak had recently emptied the baths in 14 hours. He recommended that expert advice be obtained as to the best methods of stopping leakage. The matter was left in the hands of the Baths Committee, with power to act. From the captain of Salvation Army re charge for water supply. —The captain will be informed that the Council consider the present annual charge reasonable.

From J. E. Bennett, caretaker of the .cemetery, reporting on the state of the cemetery and suggesting necessary repairs.—The matter was left in the hands of. the Cemetery Committee, with full power to act. From J. Mowatt, applying for plumber's license.—License to be issued on compliance with by-laws.

From Mr. J. Smith, on behalf of Hawkins and Smith, asking that a letter be framed for Mr. Hawkin's signature with reference to cost of laying dowji footpath in front of the Railway Hotel.—lt was left in the hands of the clerk to frame the letter, Mr. Hawkins' share of the cost of the footpath not to exceed £2O.

' From secretary of Library Committee, notifying that Mr. H. W. Tarplee's appointment as chairman and Mr. -H. Trimble's as hon. secretary and Measurer, also enclosing cheques for signature. From Health Inspector, re alterations to drainage and plumbing connections, als6 burning of rubbish on roadside. From the residents of Matai and Tawa streets, asking that something be done to improve the state of the roads, which are almost impassable for pedestrians.— Cr. Young reported that the Works Committee had had the matter in view for some time, but the work would prove expensive.—The matter was left with the .Works Committee.

The resolution passed at a special I meeting of the Council re the special rate for Baths,was confirmed. Cr. Young, on hehalf of the Works Committee, reported that the wet weather was having a damaging effect on the ' streets, which were cutting up.; He re- ' commended that a scraper be procured for the roads. He also reported that the metal obtainable from the pit at present was of an inferior quality, and suggested that broken river metal be used ,for the main streets and pit metal for the side streets 1 . The committee had decided to carry on the Standish street footpath from 'the. Salvation Army barracks to the corner of Carrington street, anct to put in a crossing from the footpath to the metalled Mr. Bennett's in Standish street south.—The report was adopted—Tfte Works Committee were instructed to procure scrapers for the crossings and streets and to inspect a block in the drainage in Cutfield street.

Cr. Young raised the question of the men's wages.—lt was moved that the men have Is per day added to their wages during the absence of the foreman. An amendment to the effect that the amount, equal to Is per day, be paid to men in the form of a bonus at the expiration of the extra responsibility Caused bv the foreman's absence, was carried. Some discussion took place wih regard to the dpain in Eliot street, connecting with the creek in the sports ground. It to hold a special meeting on .sßpar, the members to inspect the position in the meantime. Cr. Surrey brought up the question of borough valuations. The ' committee elected to look'into the matter will meet in the near future. The matter of installing the telephone in the borough offices was discussed. After some argument as to the cost of 1 installation, it was decided to instal the telephone if the initial cost did not exceed £l. Ai. counts amounting to £176 15s wen iiissed 'for payment. •' ■
