The North German Lloyd' announces that in the case of the working agreement between the Orient and Peninsular Steamship Companies, in October they will cut the first-class fares from Southampton to the Commonwealth down to £6O, and the second-class to £32 (plus ten per centum). The North German Lloyd claims that since the English companies are running superior steamers, the Germans ought to be allowed to charge less. The Orient and P. and 0. Companies contend that all rates for mail steamers should be the same. A rate war is feared.
