j (From Our Own Correspondents). POHOKURA. Land has been changing hands here pretty freely lately. Mr. R. H. Newing has sold his farm of 2000 acres to a Mr. Allen, of Fordeli. Mr. Newing held a clearing sale on the Ist, and his stock realised good .prices, 20-months steers ■bringing £3 17s fid and 1260 ewes 14s !)d each, ewe lambs 12s 6d, hoggets 10s lOd, wethers 14s. Rams sold on the low side. Mr. Newing has lived here for the past eight years, and he has been a good and successful farmer. He will be leaving in | a few dt\ys for his new farm at Feilding. | Messrs Speck Bros, have also sold their farm of 1030 acres to a Mr. Jackson, of 1 Gisborne, at £4 per acre. Mr. Jackson i takes possession on August 1. I The railhead is only one mile from the Pohokura railway station yards, and we expect to see the ballast train along here shortly, and the sooner the 'better, for the road is nothing less than a quagmire.
WAREA. The first of the series of euchre parties in aid of the hall fund was held in the hall on Wednesday night last. The weather was not too fine and consequently there was a very poor attendance, especially of ladies, but in spite of everything the entertainment was very enjoyable. There were about half-k-dozon tables in use and eleven games were played. Two prizes were given, the lady's prize being won by Miss Young, who had nine games to her credit; and the gentleman's prize by Mr. John Fawcett, who had to play off with Messrs P. Julian, W. Thornell, C. W. Revell and M. D. Rodgers, who all won eight games each. The room was then cleared of the tables and dancing started and this was kept up nntil the early hours of Thursday. Mrs. Rodgers supplied the. dance music. Supper Was handed round at midnight. The next euchre .party will be held on July 6.
j PUNIHO. I A farewell social was tendered Mr., Mrs. and the' Misses Thompson in the school-room on Tuesday night last. The I weather was against the (public, and it '■ was not until the day 'before that, it was decided to give them a send-off, so everything was done at a moment's no l tice, 'but in spite of all the school was fairlv well filled. During the even-ing-songs were given by Misses Rita Hill, Phoebe Banv and' others. . Several selections on the phonograph were given on Mr. Thomson's machine. A few exhibitions of f t tep dancing were given t>y Whero. About midnight supper was hanne.l ronn-1 bv the ladies. Mr. Thomas, the local -schoolmaster, made a presentation to-Mrs. Thompson of a New Belgi'ca lamp on behalf of the people of the district. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, who have been in the district for several years, have been good settlers, and all here are sorry that they are leaving the district, everyone wishing them good luck in their future home at Morrinsville, near Hamilton.
