THE LOST BOTTLE OF WHISKY.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln your Tuesday's .paper of last week appeared a very interesting account by Mr. W. T. Jennings of, the difficulties of travel in the early days on the present route of the Stratford-Ongarue railway. In it are various matters of interest, and one in particular that is a strong argument against the statement that there is nothing Qilce whisky in a case of collapse from fatigue. To quote Mr. Jennings' account: "Mr. .Crowther becoming worse the half bottle of whisky \yas requisitione!—and it was not there. There was a grisly silence that could' be felt, for it was. an anxious time, as Mr. Crowther had, turned a blue pale color. However, Julian, a splendid bushman, soon had some hot tea ready, and the rest and wjirmth brought our sick man round." Exactly; possibly had the whisky not been lost, and, several doses administered to Mr. Gro.wtjier. Ije probably would not have come round. It is well for persons to realise what they seem so slow to learn —that the warmthgiving properties of whisky are a myth, and it may be well just here to mention the fact that quite recently when those two ladies who had been lost 'on Mt. Egmont were safely back at Dawson's Falls they were in such a state of collapse that it, seemed as if they we're dead; but the medical gentleman who happened to be there had (so I am informed) too much regard for his reputation and his patient's well-being to give ■ whisky, _and in this case hot coffee was the stimulant used.—l am, etc., VIGILANT.
