Mr. Grace, who was in charge of the refinery operations in connection wrtli the Taranaki Petroleum Company's show exhibit, left by the Takapuna for Auckland on Monday night, en route to Gisborne in connection with oil matters there. His Excellency the Governor leaves for Auckland on Monday. On arrival he will be officially welcomed, and durhg his visit he will hold a levee. His Excellency leaves on his return to Wellington on the following Wednesday. Press Wire.

M!r. H. S. Fitzherbert, S.M., has so far recovered from his recent illness as to enable him to resume his magisterial duties this morning. Mr. L. G.- Reid, who has been relieving here, will remain in New Plymouth for another week o.r so, lest Mr. Fitzherbert finds that the work overtaxes his strength. Tile following list of the different public positions held by Mr. J. Andrews during his 44 years' residence in the Hui-, rang'; district shows that he lias done piofe than his share in the public interest:—Eighteen and a-lialf years member of the Education Board; two years member of last Provincial Council; three years member of the County Council; three years member of the Hospital and Chari table Aid Board j thr.ee years member of Road Board and two years chair man j 34 years chairman and custodian < of Cemetery Trust; 31 years chairman of Library Committee; 26 years postmaster and mail carrier; I'2 years chairman of Domain Board; 12 years chairman of Hall Committee; 11 years chairman of School Committee; besides presiding over public meetings, social gatherings and such like. This makes an aggregate of 155% years' service.

A naval officer- who distinguished him* st'.lf considerably in the Maori War in the far north of New Zealand, died this wo'. k at Edinburgh (writes a London correspondent under date May 20). Admiral David Robertson Macdonald, who waa a native of Inverness-shire, joined the Navy in IS3I and came to the East India and Australian station as lieutenant on 11.M.5. Hazard. Early in 1844 the Hazard was ordered: to New Zealand, and in August of that year, on the death of Obtain Bell, Macdonald became co»mander. In 1845 he landed with a small body 'of marines and seamen to aaaipt in the defence of Kororoika against the attacks of Hone Heke. For his gallant conduct on this occasion, when he was severely wounded he was promoted commander and received the New Zealand medal. Five hundred colonists sifrapd an address of thanks to him, and he was presented toy the Governor and eightytwo others with a sword of honor. Captain Macdonald was afterwards appointed inspector of lifeboats and number of awards for gallantry in lifeboat work.
