FINE OF A SHIPPING COMPANY
AN APPEAL DISMISSED. By Cable. —Presis Association.—Copyright Received July 5, 11.10 p.m. . London, July 5. The owners of the steamer Crown of Galicia appealed against the Board of Trade's decision not to allow a £IOO fine to be debited against their account in respect of a Chinese member of the crew who deserted in Australia, as expenses incurred through his desertion.
Counsel on behalf of the Board of Trade argued that the owners knowingly risked taking the Chinaman to Australia, and were fined, primarily because they broke the Australian law. The owners being permitted to make collective returns of accounts, of absent seamen, if the present claim were allowed it would have a disastrous effect on British seamen, whose accounts might be lumped with those of deserting Chinamen. .
The Magistrates supported the Board of Trade.
