PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. SIR CHARLES BOWI'K RE-ELECTED < SPEAKER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Council met at 2.30. Hie Council was called over, and all, wcic present save eight, five of whom] were excused on account of illness, and three on account of absence from .the Dominion. The Clerk of the Council declared Sir Charles Bowen duly elected Speaker, there being no other candidate. Sir Charles briefly -acknowledged the honor, and Captain Baillie offered con-, gratulations. Dr. J. G. Firidlay, K.C., AttorneyGeneral, in congratulating Sir Charles Bowen, sketched his political life, which practically extended over the history of the colony. The lion, gentleman, he said, was one of the most distinguished pioneers in the Dominion, and all present wished he might bo long spared to the counsels of the nation, and to i enjoy the honor conferred upon him. The Hons. T. Kellv, H. F. Wigram, C. H. Mills and J. T. Paul also spoke in eulogy of the Speaker. Sir Charles again expressed his hearty thanks for the Huil expressions of members of the Concil.
