FIRE AT CEMENT WORKS.
CONSIDERABLE,DAMAGE DONE. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A serious fire broke out in the- Bumside Cement Company's works at Burnside about 5 o'clock this morning. When the fire was discovered, it had a strong Ijold, but a bucket brigade did splendid work in keeping the flames in check. The fire started in or near the coal stores, but the origin is not known. Nearly 609 tons of cement, ready for bagging', and valued at close on £ISOO, were stored in this wing, and the flames obtained their strongest hold among the wooden bins containing the cement.
Two out of six electrical motors were practically destroyed., but how far the other motors and machinery have been injured, it is hard to tell at present, the roof imving collapsed and covered them in the debris. It is certain that the gear and belting are utterly destroyed, and these, with the wiring and genera! electric installation, are expensive items. The walls and the steel girders are all that is left of the wing where the fire ■began. The men were working till midnight last night, and everything appeared to be safe when they left. The Burnside Lime and Cement Company have been unfortunate, for a little over two and a half years ago a modern building they were erecting was blown down, and it was in consequence of that accident that they built the present place in brick. The Guardian Office holds all the insurance, totalling £12,000; •buildings £2750, machinery £G7SO, stock £140"0, oil engine £IOO, electric motors and installation £IOO.
The damage is hard to estimate yet, but possibly it will amount to over £3OOO.
