WELLINGTON CAPPING CARNIVAL. Wellington, Thursday. The capping carnival took place to- • day. Sir Robert Stout, Chancellor of the University, .presided in the Concert i Chamber of the Town Hall, where the degrees were conferred this afternoon. Earlier in the day the students of Victoria College made merry in procession through the streets. There were many novel features, and the procession—the first of its kind in Wellington—was witnessed by thousands. The students brought up at the Queen's Statue in Post Office Square, where burlesque speeches were made. MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Gisborne, Thursday. A, bottle has been discovered in Waipawa Lagoon containing a slip of paper with the words, "'Wrecked wn Young •Nick's Plead, Meteor." The writing is identified as that of a fisherman, Jack I Olsen, who, with a companion, sailed from Gisborne on September 10, 1908, in -the yawl Meteor and has not since been hoard of.
