AMUSEMENTS.

m _____ MADAME CARRENO. From tlie booking of reserved seats for the' Carreno concert, it is evident that Herr Benno Schreck's enterprise in bringing us such ,an eminent artist a second time, and enabling us to Hear her at "normal" rates of admission, at advertised (which are very much lowjr than we would have to pay in Europe or America for this privilege), is greatly appreciated by our music-loving community. Madame Carreno's career su a virtuoso has earned her much distino; tion in many lands, and justly so, since she gives flawless interpretations of, works that seem to require quite opposite powers. She plays Liszt's gigantic compositions with unrivalled power, «nd then passes to Bach or Beethoven with calm dignity, or to Chopin, Schumann or Brahms with marvellous tone coloring. She is reposeful, passionate, capricious, grave or gay at will, and with* tropical "southern" warmth and glowing beauty in her playing, her wonderful vigor of body and mind sustaining- her throughout.

OPERATIC SOCIETY. ' At a largely-attended rehearsal of the recently-fornud Operatic Society held last evening, it was unanimously decided to stage the opera "Dorothy" at an early date. Th e society have been very fortunate in securing tne services of Mr. Prank Cornwall as conductor and Muse Aiken Warren as pianist, and as the principal vocal' talent of Xew Plymouth have handed in their names as members, ever-thing augurs well for the futurewelfare of the. society.
