AT THE MERCY OF THE SEA
«>- THE ILL-FATED LAUDERDALE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Magisterial enquiry concerning the wreck of the Lauderdale will be held fit Greymouth. Captain Post, of the Tutanekai, and Captain Black, fomerly in the Blackball Company's service, will be nautical assessors. Greymouth, Last Night. A heavy north-east gale is raging, with tremendous seas breaking along the coast. The stranded Lauderdale has been washed closer inshore, and seas are breaking right over her. It is im-, possible to get near her, and she is simply at the mercy of the sea. The captain and crew are ashore, and are none the worse for their experience. A statement that the tug's fires were not banked proves to be incorrect, as the engineer states they were banked and that steam could have been got up in half an hour. The Harbor Board intends to hold an investigation, apart from the nautical enquiry.
