AMUSEMENTS.

BENEEIT CONCERT. Had the public responded with the same alacrity as did the local amateurs tjo) the appeal for funds to assist Mr. Fred Stephens in his hour of adversity. the Theatre Royal would have been crowded to the footpath last night. Of course, the amateurs may have more to thank the veteran custodian for than the average playgoer, and this is ft fact. But the playgoer has had the benefit, for the many comedies staged by our New - Plymouth dramatic troupe have been enjoyed by the public to a. far greater measure on account of "FredV willing and generous assistance.' 'Hie programme submitted last night wag one of the best-put on by local talent tor » long time, and the audience was fully appro dative. Owing to an unusual tax on 'space in this issue lengthy notice is impossible. The programme was M follows:—Orchestral Mr. Will Perry's orchestra; song, "The Mighty Deep" (encore, "The Good Rhein Wine"), Mr. T. Woodard; quartette, "Stars of the Summer Night" (encore, "Roses"), Messrs. W. P. Crawford, E. Clarke, W. Ambury, and F. Hooker; song, "Love the Pedlar" (encore, "Rosalie"), Miss Handley; song, "The Old Black Mare" (encore, 'The Yeoman's Wedding"). Mr. F. Cornwall; "Biograph" pictures; banjo quartette,' Messrs. Cornwall, Bayly, Medlev, and McEwen; song, "Youth has a Happv Tread" (encore, "Eyes that used to Gaze into 'Mine"), Mr. R. Nixon; song, "Tell Me, My Heart," Miss B. Handlev; quartette, "Sweet and Low," Misses Buckman, Messrs. E. Clarke and T. K. Southall (encored); "Biograph" pictures. Then followed a hilarious and successfully ■ staged comedietta, "Mrs. Hilary Regrets," in which "Mrs. Hilary" was aptly personified by Mrs. C. H. Weston, and Dr. Power by none leas than Mr. F. J. Easther, whilst Mr. Leslie Hill acted as the butler. The accompaniments during the evening were played by Mrs. Cornwall and Missea Warren and Bowling.
