BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION
A mooting of the committee of the .Plymouth Reautifving Association was held on Saturday evening. His Worship the Mayor presided, «„d there were also present: Messrs. R. C. Hughes, W. W. Smith, J. J. Staples, E. J. Sole R. W. Davies, and F. W. Sandford (secretary). The president reported the completion of the .paths on Raines Terrace, and that tree-planting had been done near Mount Rryan. Haines Terrace had been kept in order, and the broken trees remor£d after the big Faster gale. It had now been handed over to the Borough Council, from whom the association had received a letter of thanks for the work done. Special mention was made of the great assistance rendered iby Mr. G. H. MeGahey, who had already* done a lot of planting on Baines Terrace, and hto election as a life member was confirmed. The accounts showed a credit balance of aibout £ll, and the total expenditure was about £4O.
It was decided that for the coming year the association concentrate its efforts on the ibeautification and !)«-««.,,. men* of Marsland -Hi" „„: z{s>? nrMwient - „—«, ftna that the wmm oaxa Application to Mr. Coyle, the gaoler, for prison labor to work on the hill. The committee decided td orf Marsland Hill and consider plans fop.lmproved walks and access, .planting, 'Ht. The president was authorised to oafl 1 a public meeting to discuss this work an 3 to further the aims of the association The Borough Council will be requested to define the western boundary of Babes Terrace, with a view to giving the public the full tise of it for picnic purposes. Mr. Davies reported that Mr. J. Wheeler would be gilad to give a quantity of giant bronze flax roots, which should ibe very suitable for Marsland Hill, and the secretary was instructed to write for the flax afld' fo thank Mr. Wheeler for his offer.
Mr. Safldford offered to donate a quantity of good flax roots. Upon' the motion of Messrs. Slnith and Hughes, a hearty vote of thanks wa« accorded' to Messrs. Sole Brrfs. for their kindness in .placing "Aotea" at the disposal of the association for a Sunday concert, and a vote to the* Garrison Band fotf its services.
I Mr. Sole offered' to allow the ossoeia- ! tion to use "AotelC* in the coming summer, and said he proposed' this year to open the grounds to the public first on a Thursday afternoon, instead'of on Sunday, as heretofore, at tlie request of a large number of citizens; On the opening afternoon he would place the ground* at the disposal of the ossbtiation", who» mi«rht hold a hi? garden party, with an orchestra, afternoon tea, attli' so oh.— The offer was accepted, and' Mr. Sole was tendered the thanks of tlie committee.
Mr. Tisch, the Mayor, has generously promised £2 2s for competitive designs for the (beautiflcation of Marsland Hill.
