STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From' &m Own Correspondent). Stratford, Friday Night. As a result of the public comment on the' straying; stock nuisance, G. B'mnchi | was fined 10s and costs for allowing two horses to stray on the roads. In a football match between the Stratford and Mdhirst schools played at Stratford yesterday, the local boys won tov 3 points to nil. *Mr. J. B. Hine ; M.P., left by the mail tmin this morning for Wellington, to attend the opening of Parliament. Stratford' footballers had a bad time yesterday, being defeated in all three matches. For many reasons the teams were short, and it was noteworthy that many veterans who have not donned the jersey for some years turned out to do battle for the club. And in passing it may be recorded that the veterans did not play the worst game on the ground. One of the substitutes tells rather a good story. ,His pants were several sizes too long; Ms boots considerably too large. Two pairs of socks failed to make the boots anywhere near fit him. Then the idea struck him that if he cut off the superfluous portion of his nether garments and stuffed this into the toes of the boots it might ibe more comfortable. The experiment was tried and was a success.
A suggestion has ibeen made that a veterans' team of Taranaki reps, should play the reps-, of to-day. Saturday Night.
The committee of the Stratford A. and P. Association propose visiting the newly-acquired show-ground next Thursday, with the object of determining the sites for tile grandstand, yards, produce shed, and other 'buildings. The membership rail of the A. and P. Association continues to increase, and at every meeting of the committee new members are added. The secretary has had the pleasure of enrolling on the list the first lady member, and it is to be hoped' tl'/at other ladies will follow the example set them.
Mr. IT. B. Morrison, of the staff of the local branch of the Bank of New South' Wales, has been transferred to Wellington. He has ibeen succeeded by Mr.. Sch'ofield, of Wellington. It appears from accounts of the sengers that the derailment of the Wel-lington-New Plymouth express yesterdfty very nearly led to a serious accident. Mr. E. Jackson, of the staff of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, was returning from a holiday trip to Australia. He was pinned to his seat by the door, and the end of the preceding carriage, which telescoped the one in which he was a passenger, almost reached him.
Judgment was given in the case Hodge v. Kemp, a claim for £lO7 Is 8d commission, for the plaintiff for £53 10s. The Magistrate agreed not to formally enter judgment pending consideration by the defendant of the question of appeal. In the case J. Ceballo v. T. H. Henderson, a claim for £lB 16s for wages alleged to 'be due, judgment was given for the plaintiff for £lB Ts 4d and costs. The Mayor, Mr. J. Masters, left bv the mail train this morning on a visit to Wellington.
