According to a correspondent, writing to the London Shipping Gazette of April 29, each week in the previous three months had shown a decrease in the number of sailing, ships ,under the British ; flag, owing, to 'sales to foreign buyers, chiefly Germans, Italians and Norwegians. During that time twenty sailing vessels," of a total tonnage of 10,100, had been sold at prices equalling £1 15s per tort, register. One of the>ships sold, the Parkdale, was on the overdue list in 1906, from Geelong to Table Bay, a passage which occupied 100 days. Two others had been laid up at a Continental port during the last two years. Dealing with the general question of sailing-ship trade, the correspondent points out that the Donna Francisca and other British sailing ships have been two years at Portland, Oregon, waiting for a cargo, which had not come, and that the French ship Emma Lanrans went from England to Hobart, San Francisco and Sydney in 'ballast trim all the while. , Even so, however, she might be earning i;ioney for the owners under the French •bounty mileage system.
