INGLEWOOD v. NEW PLIMOITH. New Plymouth played Inglewood at ' Inglewood yesterday, but owing to Nixon '• failing to turn up the visiting team ; played one man short. From a specta- • tor's point of view it was a very attractive exhibition, and it was certainly the I most interesting game in the northern ' division this season. From the bully- | off the ball passed quickly into the Ini glewood circle, where Crawford landed a fine goal within a couple of minutes of starting. Inglewood quickly retaliated, and 'Spurdle made the scores equal. Shortly afterwards, from a fine piece of play on Inglewood's part, Jim Harris again netted the ball. Shortly afterwards Potts shot a goal for New Plymouth, tout of a scramble. From then on to half-time there was no alteration in the score, although play was very fast, the ball travelling rapidly from end to end of the field, and the spell ended 2-all. The second spell opened brilliantly, each side securing advantage in -turn, but neither side scoring for some considerable time. Then, in quick succession, N. Sutherland and Jim Harris scored for Inglewood, giving New Plymouth two goals .0 get to draw. This seemed to wakft up the dauntless ten, amd from a brilliant piece of play on the part of Outfield anw AVood, the iwio wing-forwards, - Am'. ,;ry goaled. New Plymouth play J for some time on the defensive, play hovering dangerously near their circle, about twenty hot shots being quickly diverted by 0. Lawrey, who quite excelled himself at goal. Then, from a line shot which the Inglewood forwards missed, the ball travelled quickly to the home team's circle, where Pott, after some rattling good play on ■his pairt, levelled up the score. The whistle sounded with New Plymouth hammering hard at the locals' goal', and | the game ended 4-all, : For Inglewood, Mr. Harris played a fine game among the backs, and dim Harris and M. Sutherland were very prominent in the forwards. These three were easily the mainstay of the team. It would be hard to single out any one of the New Plymouth forwards for special mention, as they played with fine dom'Mraatiom and vim, putting in the little extra energy to make up for the one absentee. All their work would have been unavailing but for the very fine exhibition by P. Ambiiry at lullback and C. Lawrey in goal. Ambury. sarved time and time again by clever stick work, and gave the finest exhibition of defensive tactics seen on a Taranaki hockey field for years past. Lawry played almost a flawless game, and kept cut mny really hot shots that the Harris combination sent in. McPatterson, late of Wellington, refereed; and old players remarked that it was a treat to play under a man with such an inti- ' mate knowledge of the game, and able to strictly enforce the rules. Inglewood and Eltham ladies played at Eltham, and Eltham won by one gioal to ail. Whakatika beat Stratford on the New Plymouth Racecourse. , Inglewood B forfeited to Carrington Road. In the southern division Stratford forfeited to Hawera.
