A London cable announces the death of Henry Seville, the well-known actor. Mr. Justice Chapman will preside at the New Plymouth sessions of the Supreme Court next week. •Richard Arnst, the champion sculler, arrived at Capetown yesterday, and proceeds to the Zambesi river to-day.
A Press wire states that the Kaisei of Germany is now convalescent and will attend the Kiel regatta to-morrow (Thursday).
Mr. Frank H. Hart, of the Christchurch Press literary staff, has been appointed editor of the Timaru Herald. He will take up his new duties at the end of August. The Hon. T. Mackenzie was pressed to extend his journey as far as New Plymouth yesterday, but heavy departmental work and business at Palmerston made it impossible for him to comply. At least three of the guests at the gathering of pioneers and veterans on Monday were nonagenarians—Mr. N. (voiding being 93, Mr. James Sole 92, and Mr. David Sole 90. Octogenarians were numerous.
A New York cable states that Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt attended the wedding of their eldest son and Miss Eleanor B. Alexander, of New York. The couple will spend the honeymoon in the south, and will afterwards reside in San Francisco.
It is officially announced that General lan Hamilton has been appointed Commander in-Chief in the Mediterranean and Inspector-General of the Oversea Forces. Major-General J. Ewart will succeed General Hamilton on the Army Council.
Among the guests at the Fire Brigade banquet last night was Mr. Woolcott, for many years foreman in the Wellington. Metropolitan Fire Brigade, and the possessor of the go!i! star for twenty-five years' consecutive service. He was in the brigade for no less than thirty years.
Mr. Georire Willis, who \vn ■• secretary of the old 'Wellington DistrL-t Hospital Board and the Wellington and Wairarayia Charitable Aid Board, has been appointed general secretary of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board set up in April a» a result of last session's Act. The salary is £350 per annum. Mr. Willis is only twenty-three years of age, and is remarkably popular and. able.
At the Five Brigade dimer last night bjxi's marking the completion of two years' serviee were presented by Mr. F. P. Corkill, a member of the Fire Board, to Fireman J. Lye, making nineteen years' service in all; Fireman W. Way, nine years; and Fireman Tempero, nine years. The latter was also made the recipient of- a carved oak biscuit-barrel from the members of the brigade upon the occasion of his marriage. '
At a meeting of the vestry of .St. Mary's Church on Monday evening, a letter was received from the vicnr, the Rev. F. (i Evans, intimating that owing to indifferent health lie had reluctantly dcvidel to ask the Bishop of the Diocese to accept his resignation some time during this year. The vicar added that to give up the anxiety and r"sponsibility connected with the charge of a large parish was absolutely necessary if he was to recover his normal health again. The death is announced of Mr. James Wilson, eldest surviving son of Mr. Thos. Wilson, of Carrington Road, and a brother cf Mr. J. E. Wilson. The deceased was a New Plymouth hoy, and in his youth entered the office of Mr. •T. B. Roy. Upon attaining his majority he left for Wellington, and practised his profession as a solicitor. Up till four or five years ago he was a partner in the firm of Messrs. Kirk and Wilson, but then his lungs became affected and he had to retire from business. For a couple of years past he had been living at Otaki. The late Mr. Wilson was an enthusiastic angler, an n member of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society,
