STRANGE SHOOTING CASE
William Thomas Powell, aged 25, was charged on March 30 at Canterbury (England) with wounding Mabel Blay, a young woman from Ch&rtham. The prosecutrix was walking towards Canterbury on Good Friday when she met Powell. He had attacked her on a former occasion, and, feeling nervous, she glanced round after passing him, whereupon he discharged a pistol in her face. When Powell was arrested a pistol was found in his pocket, and it was stated | that the cartridge-, used in this kind 01 weapon contained a mixture of gunpowder, snuff, cayenne pepper, and other substances, and tliat the gas generated from the explosion was calculated to ( cause immediate insensibility, lasting several minutes, without inflicting bodily injury. The girl had since been incapacitated from work, owing to the shock ■which she received. The prisoner, giving evidence, stated that he had purchased the pistol on the previous day. He fired at the girl through a sudden impulse. A more serious charge was also hoard against Powell in relation to another young woman. He was committed for .tjiid. oft bctt cSar«jcs.
