AMERICA WANTS IT. EXCELLENT PROSPECTS OF TRADE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received June 18, 1 a.m. Melbourne, June 17.
Mr. Fisher, Prime Minister, received a cable from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, enclosing a report by Mr. C. W. Bennett (the British eral at 'New York), dated April 18, stating that a consignment of 891 carcases of New Zealand mutton reached New York, via London. The press announced that this was the first of many such shipments, as the importers found they could sell. New Zealand mutton at a high price after paying a duty of 1% cents per pound. There is reason to believe tnat meat will be diverted to New York at short notice, owing to the high prices prevailing. Mr. Bennett also says that Australian meat which lias been imported into New York via England, arrived in excellent condition, and, in spite of the duty, sold at a good profit at 2 cents per lb. less than American meat.
