STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford. Last Night. It is to bo Imped that the co-operation of -the. New Plymouth and Stratford Chambers of Commerce will lead to the improvement in the methods of handling cargo at the port. There appear to the outsider at this distance two causes which are principally responsible for the delays which so frequently occur and which prove so vexatious to the shipper. The first is the unsatisfactory nature of the steamer service, which frequently brings- about the congestion of traffic; the other is the goods-shed. The first cause can k- amended, if the Union Company can .be persuaded to alter their present arrangements so that the boats from the south will arrive at the beginning and the end of the week. The second requires an alteration of the shed whereby, instead of all the goods being dumped out of the trucks altogether, there could be. two platforms, on one of which the Xew Plymouth goods could be unloaded and on the other the country goods. How far such a suggestion could ■be given effect to is a matter for the Chambers in question to bring under the notice of the Department. Mr. J. P>. Hine will give a pre-sesskmal address at Stratford on 20th June. During the season 120 shooting licenses were taken out with the Stratford Acclimatisation Society. The "yes-no" policy. The railway line to Te Wera, was to .have been taken over by the Department on Monday. This has at the last moment been altered, and the , intimation is now given, after advertising the timetable, that the new service will not come into force until 20th June.
