Saturday was ''District Nurse Saturday," a large iband of ladies making a systematic canvass of the town, while others were stationed at the corners of the business streets. Over £2BO was collected, though it is expected the total will be nearly £3OO when all the amounts are in. PATENT FIRE ALARM. Christchurch, Saturday. A new system of fire alarm, with lettered shutters corresponding to particular streets, is in operation here. . THE WEATHER. Christehurc'h, Saturday. The squaM last night caused much temporary inconvenience. Some cyclists were blown over, and others tumbled through side slips on greasy streets. AMENDING THE COMPANIES' ACT. Wellington, Saturday. A deputation from the Accountants' Conference waited on the Premier today, and urged on <him the necessity of amending the Companies' Act. The president, M. Barraud, said that a suggestion had been made that the audit of companies other than private companies should be carried out by a public accountant only, and the conference considered the Government should amend the Act in that direction. The Premier, in reply, said that the suggestion was worthy of favorable consideration'. His own opinion was that the auditing of public companies on the lines indicated was desirable. He believed private companies s'hou'ld have the opportunity to select their own auditors.
